We look after more than 74,000 kilometres of pipes across our network. Making sure these pipes deliver your gas safely and reliably means that we need to upgrade or repair them at times. We know that roadworks can be frustrating, but our essential work keeps you, your family and local community safe.

Planned work
Monday 28 October – B3327 St John Road, Wroxall
We're currently working on a gas escape located outside the Donkey Sanctuary on St Johns Road in Wroxall. Due to the location of the gas main in the road, we need to temporarily close St Johns Road from the junction of Whiteley Bank Roundabout to past the Donkey Sanctuary.
The road will close on Monday 28 October from 9.30am and will mean no through vehicle access in either direction past the point of the closure. A signed diversion will be in place. Pedestrian/cycle access will be maintained.
Vehicle access to the Donkey Sanctuary – there will be no vehicle access from the Whiteley Bank Roundabout (northern) end of the closure, with access via the diversion route from the south of the closure.
Vehicle access to properties between Whiteley Bank Roundabout and the Donkey Sanctuary will be maintained via the roundabout. All other access to St Johns Road will be from the south.
It's too early to say how long the repair will take and we’ll provide updates here as soon as we know more.
Monday 30 September - Airlie Street, Alyth
We're carrying out essential repairs to our gas network in Airlie Street, Alyth.
For everyone's safety around our work area, we'll need to temporarily close the road between its junctions with Market Square and St Ninian's Road.
The temporary closure is expected to last for approximately one week but we'll reopen the road sooner if it's safe to do so.
Friday 23 August - Kingsmills Road, Inverness
We need to carry out emergency gas mains replacement work to our network in the Kingsmills Road area of Inverness to ensure the area continues to receive a continued safe and reliable gas supply.
Our project will begin on 26 August 2024 and last approximately 17 weeks.
We’re carrying out our work in phases to reduce disruption as much as possible. Kingsmills Road will be closed in three phases.
Emergency vehicle access will be maintained during our work. Please note access into the Nursing Home will be open.
All business in the area will be open as normal during our work and access for residents will be always maintained throughout the project.
Emergency gas pipe repairs
When upgrading pipes or installing a new connection, we can plan the roadworks in advance. But when safety is at stake we must respond quickly and efficiently, and this may mean having to carry out streetworks at very short notice or at night. Sometimes we have to start work before the information filters through to our map. When that happens, we’ll add that information here.
Friday 8 November – A217 Garratt Lane, Wandsworth
We’re continuing to urgently replace a section of our gas network in the A217 Garratt Lane area, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas is delivered to nearby properties.
This essential work is being carried out to prevent further leaks on our old, affected pipes and minimise future disruption to the Wandsworth community.
To ensure everyone’s safety and enable us to access our underground pipes, Penwith Road and Magdalen Road remain closed at their respective junctions with Garratt Lane. The temporary traffic lights at the junction of Earlsfield Road and Garratt Lane remain in operation. Signed diversion routes are in place for affected motorists, but access will be maintained for residents and businesses throughout.
This week, our engineers have surveyed our large diameter gas main along Garratt Lane, between its junctions with Earlsfield Road and Magdalene Road, to identify network connection points. We were unable to map the whole of this large diameter pipe, as a blockage in the main meant our camera equipment couldn’t pass and we’ll need to complete the rest of the surveys next week. We’ve carried out further excavations as a result of the successful surveys in preparation of decommissioning our old metal main and installing its plastic replacement from Monday 11 November.
To help maintain the gas supply to nearby residents and businesses, we’ll be continuing to install a smaller gas pipe in the footpath between 491 and 509 Garratt Lane over the next couple of weeks.
An additional team will be working in Penwith Road from Monday. This third engineering team will be excavating here in preparation of renewing the gas main in this location.
Looking further ahead, we will be excavating and surveying our smaller diameter gas main on the Earlsfield Station side of Garratt Lane from Monday 18 November.
We’re sorry for any inconvenience this work is causing residents, businesses and road users alike. We’re liaising closely with Wandsworth Council and TfL on this essential work and regularly reviewing progress to ensure disruption from this work is reduced as much as possible.
Please continue to check this page for updated information.

Tuesday 15 October - Petworth Road, Haslemere
We’re continuing emergency repairs to our gas network in Petworth Road, Haslemere.
We now need to temporarily close Petworth Road, so that our engineers can work safely. We had hoped to continue repairs with temporary traffic lights in place however, a road closure is required due to the position of our gas mains and the work need to repair them.
From this afternoon, we’ll be closing Petworth Road between Swan Barn Road and Museum Hill. A signed diversion route will be in place for motorists.
This is a busy route and significant delays are expected, so please leave extra time for your journey.
All going well, we’re aiming to complete repairs, restore the road surface and reopen the road as normal on Thursday (17 October) morning.

At the moment it's too early to say how long our work will take to complete.
Tuesday 6 August – Kanes Hill, Southampton
