• Peckham, Rye Lane: FAQs

    Your questions answered …

What work are you carrying out in Rye Lane?

We’re working to replace old, metal gas mains with new plastic pipe. This will ensure a continued safe and reliable gas supply to not only homes and businesses in Rye Lane, but across Peckham, Southwark and beyond.

Our contractors Forefront will be carrying out this work on our behalf with support from our dedicated project manager.

Why are you carrying out this work now?

We’ve planned this project in close consultation with Southwark Council and other local authorities.

While we understand there’s no ideal time to carry out our work, we need to replace this old gas main. We’ve repaired several leaks on this section of pipe in recent months as it’s neared the end of its useful life. We’re now upgrading the entire section along Rye Lane, so we can keep Peckham homes and businesses safe and warm long into the future.

When will engineers be working in Rye Lane?

We’re starting our Rye Lane project on Monday 7 January and it’ll take approximately 13 months to complete.

Our engineers will be working extended hours on weekdays, plus on Saturdays as required.

We are mindful of the impact of our work on Rye Lane residents, so we’ll give the local community a break from our work on Sundays.

Will businesses along Rye Lane remain open and how can I access them?

All Rye Lane businesses will remain open as usual.

To keep everyone safe, we need to close Rye Lane to traffic in sections around our work area, but you’ll still be able to access shops, homes and businesses along Rye Lane by foot.

Will Rye Lane be closed completely to motorists?

We’re carrying out our work in Rye Lane in six phases. We need to close a section of Rye Lane to through traffic in both directions around our work area. A signed diversion route via Hanover Park and Consort Road will be in place for affected motorists.

Each phase is expected to last between approximately six and nine weeks. We’ll be posting updates on our progress, as well as keeping you updated if there’s any unexpected changes to our programme, on our website.

I’m a Rye Lane resident and expecting a parcel to be delivered. Do I need to inform the delivery company about the road closure?

We’d advise you to notify your delivery company that there is a traffic diversion currently in place. We’ll maintain access for all deliveries within our closure.

I cycle to and from work along Rye Lane. Do I need to follow the diversion route for motorists as well?

Cyclists should follow our signed diversion route via Hanover Park and Consort Road.

However, pedestrian access will be maintained along Rye Lane throughout our project. Cyclists can dismount and walk with their bicycle approximately 100m around our closure before continuing journeys.

How do I find out if my bus service is affected because of the gas upgrade work in Rye Lane?

We’re sorry for the inconvenience our road closure causes commuters on bus services serving Rye Lane. Some bus stops may be suspended and relocated away from our work area for everyone’s safety and routes will be redirected around our closure.

We would encourage all commuters to please plan ahead and allow extra time for your journey. You can find advice and the latest travel information on Transport for London’s website and by following @TfLBusAlerts on Twitter.

Will train services in and out of Peckham Rye train station be affected during the gas work?

There will be no impact on train services in and out of Peckham Rye train station because of our work.

When you’re working in Rye Lane between Holly Grove and Blenheim Grove, how can I access Peckham Rye train station?

Commuter access to Peckham Rye train station will be maintained at all times.

When we are working between these junctions, commuters can still access all train station entrances on foot around our site.

I own a business along Rye Lane. How is my business likely to be affected by the work?

We appreciate that our essential work will impact Rye Lane businesses and we’re doing all we can to support local traders during our upgrade project.

We’ve setup a dedicated information page for Rye Lane traders to explain more about our work, details on deliveries and how we can provide extra support. Please visit our information for traders page.

Will my gas supply be affected at any point during your work?

As we are renewing the pipes along Rye Lane, your gas supply may be temporarily interrupted while we carry out a section nearby to your property. We will try to keep any interruptions to a minimum, and we’ll let you know in advance if your gas supply is likely to be affected by our upgrade work.
