Kat, Trainee Team Manager

When I started working at SGN in 2017, gas was all new to me.

I didn’t come from an engineering background: I have a Masters in English, so the industry was completely foreign. The only thing I knew about gas was that it heated up my home and came on when I fired up my cooker.

With my lack of experience, I imagined my time at SGN would be a stop-gap. But working as a Depot Administrator, my passionate, friendly colleagues, great managers, and outstanding development opportunities kept me at SGN.

The perfect next step

After a year I was seconded into a health and safety role. This was a great turning point in my career: it allowed me to gain more operational and technical experience, as well as a number of formal health and safety qualifications. Towards the end of my secondment, I found out about the two-year Trainee Team Manager programme. As an ambitious people person, I thought it was the perfect next step for me.

Three years after joining SGN I’m now a Trainee Team Manager, leading a group of 15 gas emergency responders.

The trainee programme has been perfect in helping me gain the necessary experience to step up into management. I’m also learning the technical and soft skills to become a future people leader within the gas sector. The programme is giving me the time to learn, study and focus on my development, rather than throwing me in at the deep end. And I’m doing this alongside a group of peers – there are 16 other trainees in my cohort, and we regularly get the chance to meet, share experiences and compare how different locations work.

Opportunities everywhere

SGN is a big company with many departments, and opportunities in engineering, customer-facing and employee-focused roles. Each day is different – there’s always something new that I’ve never dealt with before, so that keeps things exciting.

I’m really glad I trusted my instincts, persevered and took my chances when they arose. Working with SGN has been a great experience. The weeks just fly by.
