Roadworks in your area

We look after more than 74,000 kilometres of pipes across our network. Making sure these pipes deliver your gas safely and reliably means that we need to upgrade or repair them at times. We know that roadworks can be frustrating, but our essential work keeps you, your family and local community safe.

When upgrading pipes or installing a new connection, we can plan the roadworks in advance. But when safety is at stake we must respond quickly and efficiently, and this may mean having to carry out streetworks at very short notice or at night. Sometimes we have to start work before the information filters through to our map. When that happens, we’ll add that information here.

We have a number of helpful frequently asked questions at the bottom of this page, under the Help and advice heading.

Emergency gas pipe repairs

When we need to carry out emergency repairs to our gas network, we'll add full details here.

We are working to repair a gas leak in the High Street in Camberley.

To do this safely, we have a road closure in place along the High Street at its junctions with St George's Road and Obelisk Way.

We're sorry for any disruption this may cause; we're working as safely and as quickly as we can, but we're not sure yet how long our work will take.

We will keep people updated here

Updated: 18 November 2025, 10.30am

We've been called to an emergency gas escape located on the A27 Fishbourne Roundabout. Our engineers are currently carrying out investigations to locate the leak to enable them to complete a repair.

Due to the location of the gas pipes in the road, for everyone’s safety, we have had to close the eastbound inside lane on the A27 both on its approach to the roundabout and across the Fishbourne roundabout.

It’s too early to say how long the investigations and repairs will take but we will provide updates here as soon as we know more.

We’re sorry for any delays caused to road users and advise everyone to plan your journeys.

We are currently working in the Lady Grove area of Didcot to fix a gas leak running beneath the road.

To keep people safe while we work, we have closed Lady Grove at its junctions with Sires Hill and the A4130. A diversion route is clearly signposted.

Our engineers are working as safely and as quickly as they can, but we are not yet sure how long our work will take. Once we’ve done this, we will then need to fill in the holes that we have dug and give the new road surface time to set.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience our work may cause and appreciate the support of the local community while we make this repair.

Updated Monday 21 July

We’re pleased to share that specialist repairs to our gas network at the A701 Bloomfield Roundabout in Dumfries are now complete, and reinstatement is well underway. Our team began resurfacing over the weekend, and work continues at pace.

Due to the thickness of the tar and the multiple layers of road surface required to restore the carriageway to specification, each stage must be allowed sufficient time to cool and cure properly.

We’re working quickly and safely to complete the process, with the road expected to fully reopen on Wednesday 23 July. We’re grateful to the Dumfries community and local businesses for your continued patience and support as we complete this complex and vital work.

Road access and diversions:

  • A701 northbound remains closed from the Bloomfield Roundabout.
  • A signed diversion is in place via the A75, A709, B7076 and A701.
  • Local access to Heathhall and Locharbriggs is maintained through a separate route (not suitable for HGVs).
  • Following safety concerns over vehicles exiting into oncoming traffic, one southbound lane of the A701 is also closed. Access onto the roundabout from the A701 southbound remains open.

Local businesses such as Dalscone Farm and Heathhall Garden Centre remain open. Please follow local diversion signage to reach them.

Our engineers have been working to carry out emergency repairs and monitoring our gas network in Kilgraston Road/Grange Loan in Edinburgh for the last few weeks. In the early stages, we attempted to repair the gas main but due to its condition, the decision was made to replace the old, metal pipes with new longer-lasting modern plastic ones. This will ensure we can continue to provide homes and businesses in the community with a safe, reliable and efficient gas supply for decades to come.

We’re working closely with the City of Edinburgh Council roads authority and the traffic management company and a temporary road closure is in place for the safety of everyone around our work site.

Our engineers are doing everything they can to complete these works as quickly and as safely as possible. All going well, we're aiming to complete our works, reinstate the road and lift the road closure by Friday 14 November to allow the road to be fully accessible.

We appreciate how disruptive traffic management can be for residents and road users. Please be assured we’re making every effort to minimise any inconvenience caused by our works and the team are working as quickly and safely as possible to complete the work.

Updated Tuesday 11 November

We will shortly be closing the inner ring lane on the roundabout junction of Mansfield Place, East London Street, Broughton Street and London Street.

Updated 10/10/25

We are working in the New Road area of Portland to replace part of the gas network.

After previous gas leaks in the area and due to the age and condition of the pipe, we have made the decision to replace a section of gas main to avoid further disruptions as winter approaches.

In agreement with Dorset Council, works will take place on Sunday, 12 October and continue overnight into Monday morning (13 Oct). To do this safely, three-way traffic lights will be in place while we work, and these will be removed Monday afternoon, once the new road surface has had time to set. These lights will be manned during peak times to help keep the traffic flowing.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience our work may cause and appreciate the support of the local community.

Updated 3 December

We're carrying out emergency repairs on Waverley Road in Portsmouth. Because of the location of the gas pipe within the road, and to ensure pedestrian access can be maintained safely through the work site, we have had to close Waverley Road to vehicle traffic between the junction of Romans Road and the junction of Waverley Grove. A signed diversion route has been put in place to help motorists navigate around the closure.

There is no through vehicle access past the closure point in either direction, although vehicle access to properties is being maintained from one side of the closure. Pedestrian and cycle access remains open throughout the works. Bus routes in the area will be affected, and passengers are advised to check with their service provider for the latest updates and changes to services.

At this stage it is too early to confirm how long the repair works will take to complete. We will update our website as soon as more information becomes available.

We appreciate your patience and understanding while we carry out this essential work to keep everyone safe.

Updated: Monday 8 December

Work is continuing to replace a section of our network in Lower Rainham Road, Rainham. Due to the complexity of the job, progress has taken longer than originally expected. All going well, we anticipate completion of the work and full road reinstatement by late afternoon on Saturday 13 December. All businesses will remain open as normal throughout this work.

We have taken the decision to replace this section to future proof the network and maintain everyone's safety. Specialist equipment has been brought to site to help complete the essential work.

We are working as safely and quickly as possible, and we are very sorry for the disruption this emergency work is causing. We’d like to thank local people for their patience and support, and we will continue to post further updates here as the work progresses.

We’re working on the A25 Buckland Road in Reigate to replace part of the gas network.

To do this safely, two-way traffic lights are in place along the road while we work. To help keep traffic flowing, we will have an operative on site from 7am - 7pm Monday to Saturday.

We are working as quickly and as safely as we can, and barring any unforeseen circumstances, we will have these lights in place for 2-3 weeks.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience our work may cause and appreciate the support of the local community.

Update: Wednesday 12 November

We have successfully isolated the damaged gas main at this location, and as a result, the roundabout and southbound slip road from the A3 are now open to traffic.

There is still traffic management in place and a speed restriction on the slip road from the A3 southbound leading down to the roundabout. We are working collaboratively with both National Highways, Surrey Highways and Balfour Beatty and have implemented a single-lane closure around the roundabout to maintain traffic movement.

We're now working to replace this section of the main to prevent further leaks in the future. This is a challenging job due to the location, but we will continue to work over the next few weeks.

We'd like to thank local people for their continued support and patience while we work.

Update: Sunday 2 November

Our emergency repair has continued throughout the weekend and good progress has been made on the work required so far at this location.

We will update the page with further details when they are available.

Friday 31 October

We're carrying out emergency repairs in Ripley following third-party damage to our network.

Update: 11 November 2025, 3.30pm

We're working to repair a gas leak at the junction of Norwood Road and Leigham Vale in Streatham.

The pipe we need to replace is located under the road. For everyone's safety around our work area, we have had to temporarily close this junction for the duration of our work.

Access will not be possible from Norwood Road to Leigham Vale and a signed diversion is in place.

A contraflow is in place in Norwood Road on the approach to the junction.

It is too early to say how quickly the repair will take but we will keep you updated here.

We're carrying out investigations in Church Street, Tranent, following reports of a gas smell. Due to the position of our gas main, we’ve had to close Church Street between its junctions with Elder Court and Elder Street.

While we were investigating we identified an area of subsidence in the road surface which we immediately reported to East Lothian Council. We’re now working closely with East Lothian Council and with the Coal Authority, who are managing the subsidence, while we continue our own investigations. For safety, the council has also closed Sandersons Wynd at its junction with Church Street.

A local diversion route will be in place throughout. Bus services will update their timetables and routes accordingly – passengers should check with their operator.

We know these are important routes for the community and will continue working in tandem with the council to complete our work as safely and quickly as possible.

At this stage it’s too early to confirm how long the work will take, but safety remains our top priority.

You can find more details about all our other emergency repairs at roadworks.org.

Planned work

Sometimes when we're carrying out our repairs, we find that we need to replace parts of our network instead. When this happens, we'll add full details here.

We are working to upgrade the gas network in Farnborough. The work, which will be ongoing until the end of August, involves replacing old, metal pipes with new longer lasting plastic ones to ensure local homes and businesses continue to receive a reliable gas supply.

Due to the location of the gas pipes in the roads, and for everyone’s safety, the following traffic management will be in place:

  • Rectory Road

Until 11 July - we need to close Rectory Road, between the junctions of Highgate Lane and Priory Street. Access will be maintained for homes and businesses, while a diversion will be in place via Highgate Lane and Farnborough Road (A325).

  • Highgate Lane

From 14 July for 2 weeks – we will need to close Highgate Lane at its junction with Ship Lane to replace a section of gas pipe. Access will be maintained for homes and businesses, and a diversion will be in place via Ship Lane - Farnborough Road (A325) - Highgate Lane.

  • Ship Lane

From 22 July for six weeks – we will need to close Ship Lane, between the junctions of Newtown Road and Highgate Lane. Access will be maintained for homes and businesses, while a diversion will be in place via Highgate Lane - Farnborough Road (A325) - Ship Lane.

We appreciate how disruptive road closures are for residents and road users. Our engineers are committed to doing everything they can to complete these works as quickly and as safely as possible.

If you have any specific questions regarding these works, please email customer@sgn.co.uk.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience this work will cause, and thank local people for their patience and understanding.

From Monday 9 June SGN specialist contractor, I&G Contractors Limited, will be working to upgrade the gas network on Station Road, Hailsham. The work will be ongoing for approximately 8 weeks.

These essential works will involve replacing an old, metal pipe with new longer-lasting plastic one so that we can continue to provide businesses, and wider community, with a safe and efficient gas supply.

Due to the location of the gas pipes in the road, and for everyone’s safety, various traffic management will be in place which include:

  • From Monday 9 June for 4 Weeks -a road closure on Bell Banks Road, between the junctions of Station Road and Garfield Road.
  • Between 23 June -  1 August, temporary traffic lights will also be in place on Station Road.

During the road closure, the following will apply:

  • No through vehicle access along Bell Banks Road, between the junctions of Station Road and Garfield Road -a  local diversion route will be in place.
  • Resident vehicle access to properties will be maintained and our site team will keep those affected informed of access arrangements.
  • Bus routes may be affected – we’d advise passengers to contact their service provider for the latest updates on changes to service.
  • Bin collection days will remain unaffected, unless residents hear otherwise from their service provider.

We appreciate our work, and necessary traffic management can be disruptive for local road users, and we’d like to reassure the local community that our team will be doing all they can to complete these works as safely and as quickly as possible.

If you have any specific questions regarding these works, please contact our customer service team at customer@sgn.co.uk or alternatively call 0800 912 1700.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience this work will cause, and thank local people for their patience and understanding.

We’ll soon be working to upgrade the gas network in the Goldstone Crescent area of Hove. This work will ensure that local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.

Work will include replacing gas pipes along Goldstone Crescent, from the junction with Woodruff Avenue to just past the junction with Hove Park Road. It will start on Monday, 03 November, and will finish by 14 December (2025).

To do this safely, and in agreement with Brighton and Hove Council, temporary traffic lights will be in place while we work. These lights will be manned from 7am to 7pm to help keep traffic moving. We will also need to suspend some of the parking bays as we move along the road, and information notices identifying the affected bays will be placed on the road ahead of our work.

We understand that roadworks can be frustrating, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience this essential work might cause.

We’re preparing to carry out essential gas network upgrades along London Road and Buckland Hill area of Maidstone. This work will ensure a continued safe and reliable supply of gas is delivered to nearby homes and businesses and is part of our 30-year programme of work to replace our old mains, reaching the end of their useful lives, with new, reliable plastic pipe.

We will be starting work along Buckland Hill from Monday 20 October.

For everyone’s safety, traffic management schemes will be in place for the duration of our work.

Buckland Hill – will be closed in phases from Monday 20 October for around six weeks. Each phase will be completed before moving on to the next one. Signed diversions will be in place for affected motorists.

  • Phase one – closed at the four-way junction with Buckland Road – this work will be completed during the school half term holiday. Buckland Road junction will be reopened for Monday 27 October.
  • Phase two – closed around our excavations as we replace our pipes in sections between the junctions of Hubert Walter Drive and St Peters Street

London Road phase one – We’ll be replacing the permanent traffic lights at the junction with Buckland Hill with temporary traffic signals from Monday 20 October. This is to allow traffic to turn right into Buckland Hill from London Road and is needed to maintain access for residents. We’ll be controlling the temporary traffic lights from 7am to 7pm.

London Road phase two - When we’ve completed work along Buckland Hill, our engineers will begin replacing our pipes along London Road from outside number 49, to just short of the junction with Queens Road. For everyone’s safety, we’ll be using temporary traffic lights along the road and Buckland Hill will be closed at its junction with London Road, with a signed diversion route in place.

We’ll have an operative on site controlling the traffic lights from 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday while we are working on London Road

We understand roadworks can be frustrating and we’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.

The new plastic pipe has a lifespan of 80 years. This means that once our work is done, Maidstone residents and businesses will be able to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable supply of gas for many years to come.

From Monday 6 October to Friday 20 February are working in the Upton Road area of Poole to upgrade the gas network. This is essential to ensure local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.

Unfortunately, the start of our work was delayed following damage to our operational machinery by an unknown source. This has been reported to the police and is under investigation.

Work is now underway, and to keep people safe, Upton Road is closed at its junction with Fleetsbridge Roundabout. We have also had safety concerns that vehicles are dangerously using Pergin Crescent as a way to avoid the signposted diversion route. To keep residents safe, we will close Pergin Crescent at its junction with Upton Road. Access to Pergin Crescent is still available through its other entrance.

We understand how frustrating these changes will be for the local community and we are doing everything we can to minimise the unavoidable disruption caused.  We would like to thank people for their patience while we carry out this essential work.

Updated Thursday 24 July

Our engineers are carrying out gas main replacement on a section of Winter Road in Southsea. This replacement work is being carried out urgently, to provide a permanent solution instead of a long-term repair.

Due to the condition of the main, we have had to extend this project, investing in our network. While we understand there is disruption right now, this is one of the last sections of metallic pipe in this area, meaning it will be less disruptive in the future once replaced.

We are planning to have the project completed within the next four weeks.

Due to the location of the gas main in the road, it has been necessary to temporarily close Winter Road from just south of Oliver Road to the junction of Highland Road.

This closure will mean:

  • No through vehicle traffic past the closure in either direction in Winter Road.
  • Vehicle access to Winter Road north of the closure will be via a signed diversion route from the Devonshire Avenue end of the road.
  • Vehicle access to properties within the closure will be maintained – local arrangements will be in place and the team on site will keep residents informed.

We’ll soon be working to upgrade the gas network in the London Road area of Winchester. This work will ensure that local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.

Work will start on Monday, 20 October and be completed by 23 November. To do this safely, temporary traffic lights will be in place at the junctions of Worthy Road and School Lane, and London Road and Pudding Lane.

On 10 November, we will need to close School Lane at its junction with Worthy Road until February 2026. Access for residents and local businesses will be maintained.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience this work might cause, but it really is essential to keep the gas flowing safely.

If anyone has a question about our work, they can call our customer service team on 0800 912 1700
