SGN is to carry out essential upgrade works to the gas network in Brechin to ensure local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.
The project involves diverting the existing gas main which crosses under the River South Esk. During Storm Babet and recent bad weather, the River South Esk breached the riverbank and flooded the plain where our pipe is located.
The flooding removed topsoil, exposing our pipe and creating a new flood plain where debris could be washed into. A large remediation project was urgently delivered to secure the pipe, building up physical material to cover and protect the pipe from damage.
This will help ensure local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply long into the future.
Following close consultation with Angus Council and other key local stakeholders, and works will commence on 1 June 2026 and last for approximately 8 months.
The project will be carried out in four phases to limit disruption as much as possible across the duration of the works. (See map above for visual guide).
Phase 1
Traffic lights / Give / take to allow trail excavations along the whole route starting On East mill Road at the Junction of River Street to Montrose Street - Starting 1 June for approximately 2 weeks.
Phase 2
Traffic lights/rolling road closure in section Montrose Street between The Abattoir and East Mill Road - Starting Approx 15 June for approximately 12 weeks.
Phase 3
Rolling road closure/traffic lights in section on East Mill Road between Montrose Street between River Street - Starting Approx 17 August for 20 weeks.
Phase 4
Traffic lights to allow for final isolation. Starting approximately 13 January for 4 weeks.
SGN have worked closely with Angus Council and other key local stakeholders to limit disruption during our essential project.
The new plastic pipe we’re laying has a lifespan of approximately 80 years and is also being laid away from the river south esk which takes away the pipe ever being at risk again in the future from flooding This means once our work is done, Brechin and the surrounding area will be able to enjoy a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.
We would like to thank everyone affected for your patience, understanding and support as we work to improve the energy infrastructure in Brechin.
