Update - Thursday 28 May
The second phase of work along Kingsdown Road began on Tuesday 26 May.
Our engineers are currently excavating and investigating to confirm the exact position of the gas mains and services beneath the road. We're also completing internal camera surveys of the existing pipes to inform the next stage of the project.
At this stage, we do not expect to introduce our restricted access protocol until the end of next week. We will continue to monitor progress closely and will give residents as much notice as possible.
Updated information will be shared through on‑street signage, placed where it will be clearly visible to those living along the road.
We’re preparing to carry out essential upgrades to our gas network in the Kingsdown Road area of Dover. This work will help ensure that homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply and forms part of our long-term programme to replace ageing metal gas mains with modern, durable plastic pipes.
We’ll begin work on Monday 20 April, with the project expected to last approximately ten weeks.
This work will be carried out in phases to help minimise disruption. Details of the phase information can be found below:
Where we'll be working
The Freedown
- Starting Mon 20 Apr
- Lasting approx. four weeks
- Our engineers will be able to safely complete this phase without the need for traffic management as most of our upgrades will be carried out in the footway.
Kingsdown Road and Chapel Lane
- Starting Mon 18 May
- Lasting approx. six weeks
- To safely access our pipes, both roads will be closed to motorists during this phase of work.
- As there is no viable alternative route, Kingsdown Road will be closed between 9am and 3pm on weekdays only. Open excavations will be covered by steel plates to maintain access outside of these times.
- A diversion route will be in place for affected road users while Chapel Lane is shut.

We recognise roadworks can be frustrating, and we're sorry for any inconvenience this essential work may cause. However, the new plastic pipe has a lifespan of 80 years, which means when the work is complete, nearby residents and businesses will be able to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply long into the future.
