We know that during the coronavirus outbreak, our communities will rely on us now more than ever to keep them safe and warm. The safety of our communities and employees remains our number one priority.
For this reason, and following the latest Government advice to stay at home, we're making changes to our usual ways of working. At this time, we'll only be carrying out safety-critical and emergency work to our gas network.
This means we'll be postponing our planned network upgrades in Forfar.
We're in the process of winding down our planned upgrade projects in a controlled way to ensure people and sites are safe, and our network is secure.
We'll continue to provide our 24-hour emergency service across the south of England and Scotland during the coronavirus pandemic. Our engineers will continue to attend properties and make the situation safe, as always. We have extra safety precautions in place to make sure our customers and colleagues are protected from catching or spreading the virus.
As soon as we're able to restart our gas mains replacement project in Forfar, we will update this page.
We appreciate your understanding during these challenging times.
Start date: Monday 6 January 2020
Duration: 15 weeks
We’ll shortly be starting a project to upgrade our gas network in East High Street, Forfar.
This essential work involves the replacement of old, metal gas mains with new plastic pipe to ensure a continued safe and reliable gas supply.
In agreement with Angus Council, our project will start on Monday 6 January 2020 and last approximately 15 weeks. It will involve temporary road closures in East High Street and temporary traffic lights at the North Street/Arbroath Road/East High Street junction.
We’ve split the project into five stages to help minimise inconvenience:
On Monday 6 January 2020, we’ll start work in East High Street. To ensure everyone’s safety, we need to temporarily close East High Street both ways between North Street and Queen Street. Motorists exiting Queen Street onto East High Street will only be able to turn right. A signed diversion will be in place via North Street, Academy Street and Couttie’s Wynd. We’ll also install three-way temporary traffic lights at the North Street/Arbroath Road/East High Street junction. These will be manually controlled at peak times to minimise inconvenience.
From Monday 27 January 2020, we’ll need to temporarily close East High Street between Queen Street and Couttie’s Wynd. A signed diversion will remain in place via North Street, Academy Street and Couttie’s Wynd. East High Street will also be closed to westbound traffic between Queen Street and North Street. Motorists exiting Queen Street onto East High Street will only be able to turn left. The temporary traffic lights at the North Street junction will be removed and the permanent lights reinstated during this phase.
From Monday 17 February 2020, we’ll need to close East High Street to eastbound traffic between Couttie’s Wynd and Queen Street for everyone’s safety. A signed diversion will be in place via North Street, Academy Street and Couttie’s Wynd. We may need to restrict some parking around the road closure.
From Monday 16 March, we’ll need to close East High Street to eastbound traffic between Castle Street and Couttie’s Wynd for everyone’s safety. A signed diversion will be in place via New Road, St James Road and Couttie’s Wynd.
From Monday 6 April, we’ll need to close East High Street to eastbound traffic at Castle Street for everyone’s safety. A signed diversion will remain in place via New Road, St James Road and Couttie’s Wynd. This final phase will take around four weeks to complete.
Some bus stops will need to be temporarily suspended throughout this project and replaced with temporary bus stops. Our teams will be working five days a week, between 8am and 4pm, and will work extended hours and at weekends when required.
