Our first corporate apprentice
Cherie joined us in July 2022 as our first corporate apprentice and began a 12-month Level 7 Occupational Health and Safety apprenticeship in October. This is her story.
How it started
I wanted a career in Health and Safety so I’d already started my learning journey before joining SGN. I obtained the NEBOSH General Certificate before starting the NEBOSH Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals. This year, I plan to finish my Diploma alongside my Apprenticeship so it’s a busy year for learning!
How it works
My apprenticeship is a little different from others. I don’t attend workshops or receive training from the apprenticeship provider. It’s my responsibility to prove that I have gained the knowledge and skills to pass each unit.
I also don’t have exams or assessments, instead I submit evidence of my learning and the work I do. Sometimes, I have someone observe me while I carry out my work.
I’m supported by the external assessor and my team. I gain knowledge and experience from spending time working in the region and I’ve got a development plan which lets me learn about other areas of SGN. So far, I’ve spent time in eight different departments including Operations, Environment and Energy Futures.
I’m fortunate to be a part of a skilled team who support my development every day.
What I’ve learned
I’ve learned so much through my apprenticeship – it’s encouraged me to be more self-aware. I’m learning how to be more articulate when explaining myself, how to adapt and how to coach and influence positively.
Supportive environment
I’m amazed at the amount of support I receive from both my team and the company. I get time each week to concentrate on my apprenticeship and my Diploma which really makes a difference.
I really feel welcomed and part of something good, I have a long career with SGN ahead of me.
