How it started

I began my journey with SGN in 2010 with an advanced apprenticeship in Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering. I learned a huge amount during my apprenticeship, gained an understanding of how our company works and built technical skills that I still rely on today.

I quickly realised the SGN is a company with excellent development opportunities. I was keen to progress my career here and use my experience to influence change.

The importance of mentors

After completing my apprenticeship, I found an HND at my local college that would complement my skills and experience. With support from my mentors and senior management, I successfully completed it alongside my job.

Building a network of encouraging mentors has been key in meeting my goals and furthering my career at SGN.

Finding new experiences

At SGN, I’ve found that seeking out practical experiences, in combination with skills and education, can lead to exciting new opportunities. Those practical experiences are particularly helpful when you need real world examples during interviews for potential new roles.

For me, the result was a move to a Project Engineering role in the Major Projects department.

Where I am now

I'm currently seconded into the role of Head of Major Projects for the Southern region and I'm proud to have developed to this from my Apprenticeship over the last 12 years.

My journey is the result of hard work combined with the excellent opportunities and support available at SGN. Don't be afraid to come out of your comfort zone to take advantage of opportunities when they arise!
