Our Process Improvement Manager Fern Fisher helps implement innovative ways of working, helping SGN run more efficiently

There's so many paths and development opportunities

I joined SGN as an Admin Assistant in 2015 to gain some office experience ahead of pursuing a career more closely linked to my Equine Science degree I’d just completed. But after only a short time here, I realised there are so many paths and development opportunities available to help me progress.

I started my latest role at the company within the Operations team as a Process Improvement Manager earlier this year. It’s my responsibility to help our London and West Kent depots drive down costs and improve efficiencies for quick wins, and to future-proof our business.

We're learning and improving each day

Despite having to put several trials of new techniques for the depots on hold as a result of coronavirus, I’m amazed at how well everyone is adapting to keep our business flowing. We all know how paper-based some of our processes can be and to have these up and running electronically practically overnight is fantastic.

It’s great that we’ve been able to identify some benefits that we’ll want to carry forward when things return to something that closely resembles normality. This time has enabled us to evaluate what processes have worked best and we’re learning and improving each day to help support a more efficient future.

Our recent focus has been to explore ways in which our engineers can work safely on site in the future. Alongside the Safety and Procurement teams, I’m looking at how we can ensure the PPE for our Ops teams is fit for purpose to keep everyone safe and to limit the spread of infection.
