Bereavement Energy Support

Why we’re working together

Managing household finances, such as energy bills, can feel overwhelming after losing a loved one or when caring for someone in the final months of their life.

The emotional, psychological and physical strain of losing a loved one can significantly impair an individual's ability to manage financial matters, particularly if they didn’t manage the family finances previously.

Bereavement can also lead to a reduction in household income, which can worsen existing financial difficulties and increase the risk of falling into fuel poverty.

Cruse is the UK’s leading bereavement charity, supporting people online, through its helpline and in person.

We’ve proudly partnered with Cruse since 2024, embedding energy safeguarding within the charity’s trusted bereavement support services.

Building on the success of our previous 18-month programme, our new programme is helping alleviate fuel poverty for bereaved people and those facing a bereavement across our Southern network area.

Together, we’re supporting bereaved people to maintain a safe and warm home so they can focus on their mental health and wellbeing while grieving or caring for a loved one, rather than worry about their energy bills.

What we’re achieving together

  • Upskilling Cruse employees and volunteers to confidently identify and triage households in fuel poverty
  • Providing bereaved households with energy safeguarding support
  • Promoting the Priority Services Register and helping households sign up for the free service
  • Raising awareness of carbon monoxide safety and providing free CO alarms to households most at risk of CO harm
  • Increasing financial resilience through income maximisation and scam awareness
  • Connecting households to specialist energy, debt and benefits support from our Safe & Warm community partner
