A safe, resilient and dependable gas network is central to our purpose and vital to Britain’s energy security. Every day, we deliver gas to homes, businesses and essential services across Scotland and southern England, ensuring communities have access to the energy they need, whenever they need it.

Our network maintains 99.99% reliability, providing secure energy supplies through all seasons and conditions. During periods of peak winter demand, when renewable generation can be lower, the gas grid carries up to five times more energy than the electricity network. This flexibility and scale play a critical role in keeping homes warm, supporting industry and maintaining the resilience of the wider energy system.

North and South

Operating across two distinct geographies brings unique challenges. In Scotland, we serve some of the UK’s most remote communities, often in harsh winter conditions. In the south, we work within densely populated urban environments, including south London, where complex infrastructure and busy transport networks require careful coordination.

Through proactive asset management, detailed planning and targeted investment, we ensure gas continues to flow safely and reliably across both regions.

At the heart of our operations is our 24/7 Gas Control Centre. Working alongside our System Operations teams, it continuously monitors network performance, manages gas flows and pressures, forecasts customer demand and coordinates responses to incidents. These capabilities help us maintain a resilient network today while planning for future energy requirements, including growing biomethane supplies and evolving industrial demand.

Resilience is strengthened through sustained investment in our infrastructure. During RIIO-GD2, we invested £138 million across 215 transmission projects, including the complete rebuild of the historic Provan Gas Works site in Glasgow. The upgraded facility now secures gas supplies for 157,000 customers while improving reliability, reducing environmental impact and supporting future energy needs.

Looking ahead, we will invest a further £147 million through RIIO-GD3, delivering 330 projects to modernise and strengthen our transmission network. This programme will ensure our infrastructure remains safe, secure and adaptable, ready to support customers and Britain’s energy future for years to come.
