Smart meters

All energy suppliers must offer their customers smart meters before the end of 2020.

Smart meters have a screen that tells you how much gas and electricity you’re using in real time, so there are no unexpected costs and you can keep an eye on what you’re spending.

They automatically take readings for your energy supplier too, to save you both time and hassle.

If you want to get a smart meter, you should speak to your energy supplier, who will send an engineer out to install one at no cost to you.

Help and advice

Smart meters show the amount of energy you’re using, as it happens.

By calculating the amount of gas or electricity you’re using, you can get a more accurate idea of how much your energy use is costing you.

We’re working hard to support the roll-out of smart gas meters across Scotland and the south of England, but we can’t arrange for you to have one – that’s your energy supplier’s responsibility.

Any queries about smart meters should be directed to your energy supplier.

No, you don't have to have a smart meter if you don't want one.

However, smart meters are very handy to help you keep on top of your energy usage, but it is your choice.

You'll need to get in touch with your energy supplier if you'd like to apply for a smart meter to be fitted to your home. You'll find their details on your energy bill.

We can alter your gas supply pipe and move your meter but this may result in the wireless connectivity of the meter being lost.

If this happens your supplier may need to visit to re-establish the connectivity and this might cost you money.

If you want us to alter your gas supply and you have a smart meter, you should contact your supplier to discuss your plans with them too.
