The Local Transmission System (LTS) is a vital network that connects the national gas supply to local communities and industrial clusters.
Since 2022, the LTS Futures project has explored whether the LTS could be converted to carry hydrogen. This has included laboratory research, large-scale testing, repurposing a 30km pipeline between Grangemouth and Granton, and completing a series of groundbreaking operations under live hydrogen conditions. The work culminated in a successful large-scale trial in 2025, demonstrating the viability of transitioning the LTS to hydrogen.
Knowledge dissemination is a key part of the LTS Futures project, ensuring that its value extends far beyond the live trial.
We've shared what we've learned with a wide range of stakeholders including regulators, government departments, gas distribution network operators, emergency services, industry bodies, academia and local communities.
We've also attended presentations and conferences to help build awareness with our peers.
