The app-based energy theft toolkit which has just launched

Identifying and reporting stolen energy in your communities has been made simpler for our colleagues with the launch of a new energy theft employee toolkit.

The app-based toolkit arms our people to spot suspicious activity and easily report signs of gas theft as we work to keep everyone safe and warm.

The toolkit reinforces the risk of meter tampering and increases the awareness of how to prevent and identify it. The service also replaces outdated manual paper handling of reports with an online form to efficiently provide information to our dedicated Theft of Gas team.

Duty to detect

SGN’s Head of Connection Services Michael Foley said: “It’s our duty to detect and prevent gas theft to build on our commitment to ensuring everyone remains safe and warm. This toolkit will increase understanding of the dangers of gas theft and enable our colleagues to report vital information immediately.

“We’re working closely with our gas distribution network partners and energy theft organisations to prevent the costly and deadly impact meter tampering can have on communities. We’ll be sharing our new employee toolkit with the other distribution networks so our industry colleagues can help prevent gas theft and keep communities across the UK safe.”

Spiralling energy costs have been a key factor in the cost-of-living crisis faced by households across the UK. This challenging economic position has pushed millions more people into fuel poverty and has led to an increase in energy theft. People are taking shortcuts with appliance installation and maintenance to save money, but these actions have resulted in a rise in unsafe situations, putting lives at risk.

Spotted something suspicious?

It can be difficult to recognise signs of energy theft. But, if you’ve spotted something suspicious, you can report energy theft anonymously to Crimestoppers’ StayEnergySafe service online or via 0800 023 2777.
