Our new apprentices wait to practice lifesaving skills on resuscitation dummies

We’ve welcomed 18 apprentices and engineering graduates this month as they start their careers with us.

The new recruits join an already strong programme as part of which we have now have 40 Scottish apprentices in learning. We’re continuing our successful academic partnership with Fife College to support the delivery of the apprenticeship, along with the invaluable learning and support our depot colleagues provide.

This time, 12 new First Call Operative apprentices have joined us in Scotland. Their apprenticeships will run for three years during which they’ll learn how to respond to reports of gas escapes and carbon monoxide and take action to safeguard life and property. Also, how to install and replace gas meters, and install, test and commission internal gas pipework. Once completed, they’ll be working in communities responding to gas emergencies and keeping people safe and warm.

We’ve also been joined by six Engineering Graduates, with two based in Scotland and four in our southern network. They’ve embarked on a rotational placement plan where, for the first 18 months of their programme, they will spend up to three months in a variety of functions across the company, gaining knowledge and experience of the wider engineering business, before settling into a final placement for the remaining six months of the programme.

In their first week, they were welcomed by our Emerging Talent Team along with Jim Small (Head of Scotland Operations), Louis Quinn (Head of Asset Management) and our Health & Safety team Gary Mceachran and Cherie McDonald. They also spent time at Edinburgh training centre, completing their Health & Safety critical training.

Michael Gillies, Emerging Talent Manager, said: “We’re delighted to be joined by our new apprentices and graduates as they take their first steps in their careers with us. They’ve hit the ground running and it’s thanks to the help and support from departments across SGN – it’s been fantastic to see everyone embracing the opportunity to be involved in developing our emerging talent.”
