As part of International Women in Engineering Day on 23 June, we're hearing from female engineers about their experiences and how they're encouraging more women and girls to consider engineering as a career.

Amy Curley, a Regional Manager in our Godstone region, reflects on the role she plays.

International Women in Engineering Day is a great opportunity to reflect on the role we, as women in engineering roles, play in shaping our industry.

I feel incredibly lucky to lead a team that shares the same values, pride, and commitment. Godstone isn’t just a region. We all care deeply about its success. And that’s what makes the difference.

As a Regional Manager, I’m responsible for ensuring our work is carried out safely, compliantly, and to the highest standards. But for me, it’s not just about processes - it’s about our people.

What makes for success is to take a proactive approach to safety, creating a culture where everyone feels accountable, supported, and confident to speak up. Learning from incidents and understanding root causes is key to helping us improve and prevent recurrence.

I hope my team will agree that my leadership style is open and honest, with a strong focus on building a “family feel” across the region. I want everyone to feel comfortable approaching senior managers, raising concerns, and identifying training gaps, because strong communication builds a stronger, safer team.

Over the past year, we’ve built our Godstone region from the ground up, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved. We’ve established a positive health and safety culture, and we’re committed to continually improving.

At the heart of it all is the really simple belief that everyone should go home safe, every day and what do we do to ensure that we are doing what we can to achieve this.

A Regional Manager is only as successful as the teams that stand beside them. And I feel (I know I may get some challenge back on this) that I have the best senior and Team Management team alongside me!

The way to make sure every team in SGN is performing to its best is that we recruit the right people to the roles, from as diverse a pool of talent as we can, and we work hard to become the kind of company who can retain these talented people in their roles.

I’d like to thank my own team, but also to celebrate all the other talented women we have working on engineering and operational roles here at SGN.
