Michael Gillies, Emerging Talent Manager at SGN, has been appointed to the Scottish Apprenticeship Advisory Board (SAAB) Group Board, an independent, industry-led body that ensures apprenticeships are demand-led, fit for purpose, and future-oriented.
The SAAB provides employer-led advice and insight to Skills Development Scotland on how apprenticeships can best support the needs of Scotland’s economy. As a Group Board member, Michael will play a key role in shaping national apprenticeship policy, ensuring that programmes continue to provide meaningful career pathways and meet industry skills needs.
Michael’s appointment further reinforces our commitment to supporting skills growth and career development across the energy sector, as we continue to invest in the next generation of engineers and technicians driving the UK’s transition to net zero.
It recognises his extensive experience and commitment to workforce development. With over 25 years of experience in training and recruitment, he has led our apprenticeship and technical training programmes, championing the next generation of engineers and supporting initiatives that open up opportunities for people from all backgrounds to build rewarding careers.
The voluntary role involves attending bi-monthly meetings, reviewing board papers, and acting as an ambassador for apprenticeships across Scotland.
Michael said: “I’m honoured to have been invited to join the SAAB Group Board. It’s a fantastic opportunity to contribute to Scotland’s skills agenda while representing SGN on a national platform. I’m passionate about making sure apprenticeships remain a cornerstone of how we attract, develop and retain talent in our industry.”
Penny Meddes, Chief People Officer at SGN, said: “We’re delighted that Michael has been recognised with this appointment. His dedication to developing people and his insight into the skills needed for the future of our industry will make him a valuable addition to the SAAB Group Board.”
