VOCAL (Voice of Carers Across Lothian) has launched a new energy support service for unpaid carers in Edinburgh and Midlothian, in partnership with SGN.
Those caring for a family member, relative or friend, will now be able to access personalised energy information and advice through local charity VOCAL.
Rising energy costs pose a significant challenge for carers and those they care for, creating financial and health risks. Many carers need to keep their homes warmer for longer or rely on electricity to power essential medical devices such as oxygen machines, hoists, and mobility aids.
Funded by SGN, this initiative comes at a critical time as local households face financial pressures as a result of the continuing cost of living crisis. This service ensures carers are not left to navigate these challenges alone.
Hundreds of carers will benefit from personalised support provided by VOCAL’s Safe and Warm Carer Support Practitioner, along with events and training activities aimed at increasing confidence and knowledge in managing energy costs. VOCAL will also assist carers with accessing carbon monoxide alarms, registering for the Priority Services Register and adopting best practice for heating their homes efficiently.
Health and social care professionals in Edinburgh and Midlothian will also benefit from the new service through energy and home safety training, further extending the positive impact and reach of the service. SGN and VOCAL’s partnership will run until 2026.
Rosemary McLoughlin, CEO of VOCAL, said: "Edinburgh and Midlothian’s carers contribute over 1.3 billion pounds to the local social care economy, but face significant financial challenges with the rising cost of energy. Many are forced to make impossible choices between heating their homes and other essential needs. Working with SGN, we hope this new service will help to alleviate some of the current cost of living pressures for carers."
Kerry Potter, Senior Vulnerability Manager of SGN, said: "We’re committed to keeping our communities safe and warm and by partnering with VOCAL, we’re able to offer a much-needed energy related welfare advice at this time. We know that even the smallest amount of support can make a huge difference to people struggling to maintain a safe and warm home and improve the quality of life for those caring, as well as all those being cared for."
