A Portsmouth primary school’s playground has been given a fresh new look thanks to volunteers from gas distribution network SGN.

Eleven members of our Operations Control Centre took a day away from their regular duties of assigning urgent workloads to our emergency gas engineers to visit Cumberland School in Hatfield Road. They spent the day painting fences and sheds around the playground, repainting an external wall, filling holes in the field and covering with grass, and building some new shelves.

Rebecca Herbert, Headteacher at Cumberland School, said: “I went into school the day after the team from SGN had visited and the outside area looks amazing – I can’t believe how much they were able to achieve in such a short amount of time. Thank you to the team of volunteers – their hard work is greatly appreciated and has made such a difference to the grounds.”

It’s part of our Community Action Programme, where our people are given a day away from their usual work to volunteer with local organisations and charities, with hundreds of our colleagues volunteering throughout the summer across our Scottish and southern networks.

During a break in their hard work, the volunteers at Cumberland School were treated to some homemade carrot cake made by Operations Controller Ashlie Young, who came straight from working a night shift to lend a hand.
