Roadworks in your area

We look after more than 74,000 kilometres of pipes across our network. Making sure these pipes deliver your gas safely and reliably means that we need to upgrade or repair them at times. We know that roadworks can be frustrating, but our essential work keeps you, your family and local community safe.

When upgrading pipes or installing a new connection, we can plan the roadworks in advance. But when safety is at stake we must respond quickly and efficiently, and this may mean having to carry out streetworks at very short notice or at night. Sometimes we have to start work before the information filters through to our map. When that happens, we’ll add that information here.

We have a number of helpful frequently asked questions at the bottom of this page, under the Help and advice heading.

Emergency gas pipe repairs

When we need to carry out emergency repairs to our gas network, we'll add full details here.

Updated: 19 January 2025

We've temporarily closed St Helen's Wharf while we make repairs to our gas network.

Due to the complex nature of our work and location of our work site, the road is temporarily closed between its junctions with East/West St Helen's Street and Wilsham Road for approximately two weeks.

A signed diversion is in place for road users.

We're sorry for any inconvenience our urgent work may cause.

Our engineers are carrying out urgent repairs to our gas network in Mandeville Road.

To ensure everyone's safety while we work, temporary traffic lights are in place.

We know this is a busy route so would urge road users to plan ahead and use alternative routes where possible

All being well, we expect to have completed our repair work by Friday 6 February.

Update 19 February

Belmont Road in Ayr is currently closed in both directions to allow emergency repairs to our gas network.

The closure is in place between the junctions with A79 Maybole Road and Belmont Avenue. A signed diversion route is in operation via A79 Maybole Road, the A77 and Dalmellington Road.

We appreciate that this is a busy route. However, for safety reasons, a full road closure is necessary as our engineers are unable to work safely under temporary traffic lights due to the proximity of the level crossing.

All pedestrian footpaths remain open as normal, and access for residents within the closure will be maintained at all times.

Fenwickland Avenue and Belmont Avenue are also closed at their junctions with Belmont Road.

We apologise for the disruption this emergency work may cause. It is too early to confirm how long the repairs will take, but we will provide updates on this page as soon as more information becomes available.

We have been working to repair a leak on our gas pipe in the Ditchling Road area, near its junction with Bromley Road. Unfortunately, the pipe is in poor condition and needs to be replaced with a new, durable plastic pipe.

To keep everyone safe while we do this, we’ve had to close the road around our work area. Our team is progressing well, and we expect to complete the installation of the new pipe by Monday, 16 February.

Once we've replaced the pipe, we’ll begin restoring the road surface and give it time to set. This will take a few days to complete, and we’ll reopen the road as soon as it’s safe to do so.

We’ll continue to share updates on our website as the work progresses.

Updated Friday 30 January

We're carrying out urgent repairs to our gas network in the Acre Lane area of Brixton.

To safely carry out the required repairs to the affected pipe, we've needed to:

  • Install temporary traffic lights on Acre Lane at its junction with Ashurst Grove
  • Close Ashurst Grove to motorists at its junction with Acre Lane

Signed diversions are in place while Ashurst Grove is closed.

Please allow additional time for your journeys.

It's too early to say how long it will take to complete these repairs. Updates will be added to this page.

Updated Thursday 22 January

We're carrying out urgent repairs to our gas network in the Colinton Road area of Edinburgh.

To ensure everyone's safety while we complete these essential network repairs, we have needed to:

  • Install temporary traffic lights along Colinton Road
  • Close both Mid Gillsland Road and South Gillsland Road at their junctions with Colinton Road

Please allow extra time for your journeys while the temporary lights are in operation.

Motorists should follow the signed diversion routes in place while Mid Gillsland Road and South Gillsland Road are shut.

It's unclear how long this work will take yet, but we're working as quickly and safely as possible to make the required repairs to our affected pipe.

Our engineers have been working to carry out emergency repairs and monitoring our gas network in Kilgraston Road/Grange Loan in Edinburgh for the last few weeks. In the early stages, we attempted to repair the gas main but due to its condition, the decision was made to replace the old, metal pipes with new longer-lasting modern plastic ones. This will ensure we can continue to provide homes and businesses in the community with a safe, reliable and efficient gas supply for decades to come.

We’re working closely with the City of Edinburgh Council roads authority and the traffic management company and a temporary road closure is in place for the safety of everyone around our work site.

Our engineers are doing everything they can to complete these works as quickly and as safely as possible. All going well, we're aiming to complete our works, reinstate the road and lift the road closure by Friday 14 November to allow the road to be fully accessible.

We appreciate how disruptive traffic management can be for residents and road users. Please be assured we’re making every effort to minimise any inconvenience caused by our works and the team are working as quickly and safely as possible to complete the work.

Update 18 February

We have now completed emergency repairs in Queensferry Road, Edinburgh, following a third damage to our gas main.

To allow our engineers to safely and effectively restore the road surface, the eastbound lane of the A90, near its junction with Whitehouse Road, remains temporarily closed.

Due to the shallow depth of third-party infrastructure at this location, we are required to use a specialist foam concrete method for the reinstatement of the road surface. This approach is essential to protect existing utilities and to ensure a durable, long-lasting repair.

Our engineers are planning to carry out the reinstatement works tomorrow (Thursday 19 February), subject to favourable weather conditions. At present, the low temperatures are not suitable for the application of foam concrete, as it requires a minimum temperature to set correctly and achieve the necessary strength.

Once the foam concrete has been applied, the road will remain closed until the surface has hardened to the required specification. This is a vital safety measure to prevent damage to the new surface and to ensure the road is safe for all users.

All going to plan, we expect the road to reopen on Sunday 22 February.

Our engineers are responding to a gas escape in Slateford Road.

Due to the location of our gas pipe, and the levels of traffic in the road, we need to implement a northbound closure in Hutchison Terrace at its junction with Slateford Road to carry out our repairs and allow continued traffic flow on Slateford Road.

The closure will be in place from tomorrow morning, Thursday 18 December.

We're aware this is an extremely busy route, particularly during the festive period. We will be working as quickly as possible to complete our repairs.

Some bus routes will also be diverted. Please check with the local operator when planning your journey.

We'll post any updates here.

Updated: 15 January 2025, 5.30pm

Following a gas escape earlier today, we've temporarily closed the road near Orkie Farm in Freuchie, Fife for everyone's safety while we make our repairs.

A signed diversion is in place for road users.

It's too soon to say when we'll complete our repairs but we'll provide updates here.

We are carrying out urgent repairs to our gas network in the Chichester Road area of Midhurst.

To do this safely, we have closed Chichester Road between its junctions with Selham Road and The Wharf.

This closure will mean:

  • No through vehicle access past the closure in either direction – a signed diversion route will be in place
  • Vehicle access to properties within the closure will be maintained
  • Pedestrian and cycle access through the closure will be maintained
  • Bus routes will be affected – please contact your service provider for the latest update/changes

It's too early to say how long repairs will take to complete. We’ll keep our website updated

Updated Tuesday 27 January

We're continuing urgent work to repair our gas network along the A253, close to its roundabout junction with the A299.

We've identified the affected gas main to be in poor condition and will be replacing this old metal main, with new plastic pipe. This upgrade will improve the resilience of our network and minimise the risk of future disruption.

To ensure everyone's safety, a section of the A253 remains closed to motorists. A signed diversion is in place for through traffic.

All businesses remain open as usual around our work area. Access to Monkton Nature Reserve is being maintained by the A299 end of the closure.

We estimate this work will be complete by Friday 13 February.

Updated Friday 6 February

We're carrying out urgent repairs to our gas network along Poole Road outside Palmerston Garage.

To ensure everyone's safety around our work area, temporary traffic lights have been installed on Poole Road.

These lights are being manually controlled between 7am and 7pm to help manage traffic flow and minimise disruption.

Business access is maintained around our site and all businesses remain open as usual.

At this stage, it's too early to say how long it might take to complete our repairs.

Updated Tuesday 27 January

We're carrying out urgent repairs to our gas network in the Vicarage Road area of Poole.

For everyone's safety, we've needed to close a section of Vicarage Road near its junction with A35 Wimborne Road. Motorists are unable to exit Vicarage Road at this junction. A signed diversion is in place via Stanley Green Road.

Vehicles can enter Vicarage Road from A35 Wimborne Road as normal while our work takes place.

It's unclear how long these essential repairs will take to complete at this stage.

Permit since 20 January 2026

We’re on site on the A2 Moor Street in Rainham following reports of a gas leak.

Our engineers are carrying out investigations and will be working 24/7 to complete any required repairs to our gas network.

Two-way temporary traffic lights are in place around our work area to allow continued traffic flow.

We understand this is a very busy route, so we’ll have an operative on site from tomorrow morning to manage traffic at the lights between 7am-7pm.

It's too early to say how long our repairs will take to complete, but we'll post any updates here.

Updated Tuesday 17 February

A section of the A36 will be closed overnight this evening for urgent gas network disconnections.

From 8pm on Tuesday 17, until 7am on Wednesday 18 February, the A36 will be closed to eastbound motorists between the roundabout junction at Wiltshire College to just past the entrance to Southampton Retail Shopping Centre.

  • A signed diversion is in place for affected road users via the A338, A31 and A36.
  • Traffic exiting the college will be able to turn left and use Tollgate Road. This route is unsuitable for HGVs.
  • Customers and staff using the retail shopping centre car park have been asked to leave by 8pm. There will be no access in or out of the car park until 7am on Wednesday.
  • Pedestrian and cycle access to all businesses will be maintained at all times.
  • Bus routes will be affected by this closure. We advise passengers to check with their service provider for any updates to routes, stops or timetables.

We recognise this closure will be disruptive for the Salisbury community. However, this is essential work to ensure everyone stays safe and warm.

Updated Monday 26 January

We're responding to a reported gas leak in the Terminus Terrace area of Southampton.

Our engineers are investigating the leak and we've needed to close a section of nearby Terminus Road for everyone's safety.

Terminus Road is closed to motorists between its junctions with Bernard Street and Platform Road. A signed diversion route is in place for affected road users, but access will be maintained for residents and businesses.

It's too early to say how long this work will take to complete. Please follow this page for further updates on our progress.

  • Temporary traffic lights are in operation in Leigh Road and Grenville Road
  • Avenue Road and St John's Hill are closed to motorists at their junctions with Leigh Road
  • Bus stop on Leigh Road has been suspended

Signed diversions are in place for affected road users.

Planned work

Sometimes when we're carrying out our repairs, we find that we need to replace parts of our network instead. When this happens, we'll add full details here.

Updated Thursday 19 February

The local authority made us aware of planned resurfacing work on Drumcross Road, and due to our underground pipes needing replacement ahead of the embargo period, we've agreed to upgrade our gas network in advance of the resurfacing programme.

Our work will start on Monday 23 February and will run for approximately four weeks with temporary traffic lights and local road closures. The work area will cover Drumcross Road between Athol Terrace and Gideon Street. West Lothian Council will then move in directly behind our programme to carry out road surface upgrades. Emergency vehicle access will be maintained throughout our works.

We’ve written to residents and other local stakeholders to make them aware of our project and explain the details of our work. Please feel free to also share this information with anyone you think may be impacted by our project.

We appreciate roadworks can be frustrating for residents, businesses and road users. We'll be doing everything we can to minimise disruption while we complete this essential work.

We’ll soon be carrying out maintenance work in the Plaistow Lane area of Bromley. This essential work will ensure local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.

We’ll start work on Monday, 5 January, and continue for 10 days.

To do this safely, we’ll need to install temporary traffic lights at its junction with Plaistow Grove and the bus stop will be suspended for the duration of our works.

We’d like to thank local people for their patience while we work, and will keep this website updated.

We’ll soon be working in the Victoria Road area of Farnborough to upgrade the gas network. This work will ensure that local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.

We’ll start work on Monday, 05 January, and continue for approximately seven weeks, completing in February.

To do this work safely, we will need to close a lane along Victoria Road, from its junction with Farnborough Road to the junction of Kingsmead. As works progress along the road, we will need to close Victoria Road at its junctions with Elm Grove and near its junction with Station Road. A diversion route will be in place.

Multiway traffic lights will also be in place to allow traffic to pass our worksite safely.

We understand this kind of works can be frustrating, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience this essential work might cause.

From Monday 9 June SGN specialist contractor, I&G Contractors Limited, will be working to upgrade the gas network on Station Road, Hailsham. The work will be ongoing for approximately 8 weeks.

These essential works will involve replacing an old, metal pipe with new longer-lasting plastic one so that we can continue to provide businesses, and wider community, with a safe and efficient gas supply.

Due to the location of the gas pipes in the road, and for everyone’s safety, various traffic management will be in place which include:

  • From Monday 9 June for 4 Weeks -a road closure on Bell Banks Road, between the junctions of Station Road and Garfield Road.
  • Between 23 June -  1 August, temporary traffic lights will also be in place on Station Road.

During the road closure, the following will apply:

  • No through vehicle access along Bell Banks Road, between the junctions of Station Road and Garfield Road -a  local diversion route will be in place.
  • Resident vehicle access to properties will be maintained and our site team will keep those affected informed of access arrangements.
  • Bus routes may be affected – we’d advise passengers to contact their service provider for the latest updates on changes to service.
  • Bin collection days will remain unaffected, unless residents hear otherwise from their service provider.

We appreciate our work, and necessary traffic management can be disruptive for local road users, and we’d like to reassure the local community that our team will be doing all they can to complete these works as safely and as quickly as possible.

If you have any specific questions regarding these works, please contact our customer service team at customer@sgn.co.uk or alternatively call 0800 912 1700.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience this work will cause, and thank local people for their patience and understanding.

We’ll soon be working to upgrade the gas network in the Goldstone Crescent area of Hove. This work will ensure that local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.

Work will include replacing gas pipes along Goldstone Crescent, from the junction with Woodruff Avenue to just past the junction with Hove Park Road. It will start on Monday, 03 November, and will finish by 14 December (2025).

To do this safely, and in agreement with Brighton and Hove Council, temporary traffic lights will be in place while we work. These lights will be manned from 7am to 7pm to help keep traffic moving. We will also need to suspend some of the parking bays as we move along the road, and information notices identifying the affected bays will be placed on the road ahead of our work.

We understand that roadworks can be frustrating, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience this essential work might cause.

23 December

We’ll soon be working in the Bidden Road area of Odiham to upgrade the gas network. This work will ensure that local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.

We’ll start work on Monday, 05 January, and continue for approximately sixteen weeks, completing in April.

To do this work safely, we will work in phases that include road and lane closures:

Bidden Road - 5 January for approximately three weeks.

Our engineers will start work in Bidden Road at the junction of Deptford Lane. A Road closure will be in place. West Street and Deptford Lane junction will also be shut at the same time as Bidden Road

Deptford Lane - 19 January for approximately nine weeks.

We will be working along Deptford Lane; a rolling road closure will be in place as our work area progresses along the road.

The Street – 6 March for approximately five weeks

While we are working in the Street, we will need to close the road to provide a safe working area for engineers and residents.

Hook Road – 30 March for approximately three weeks.

Hook Road will need to be closed while we complete our work.

We understand that roadworks can be frustrating, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience this essential work might cause.

From Monday 6 October to Friday 20 February are working in the Upton Road area of Poole to upgrade the gas network. This is essential to ensure local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.

Unfortunately, the start of our work was delayed following damage to our operational machinery by an unknown source. This has been reported to the police and is under investigation.

Work is now underway, and to keep people safe, Upton Road is closed at its junction with Fleetsbridge Roundabout. We have also had safety concerns that vehicles are dangerously using Pergin Crescent as a way to avoid the signposted diversion route. To keep residents safe, we will close Pergin Crescent at its junction with Upton Road. Access to Pergin Crescent is still available through its other entrance.

We understand how frustrating these changes will be for the local community and we are doing everything we can to minimise the unavoidable disruption caused.  We would like to thank people for their patience while we carry out this essential work.

Updated Thursday 24 July

Our engineers are carrying out gas main replacement on a section of Winter Road in Southsea. This replacement work is being carried out urgently, to provide a permanent solution instead of a long-term repair.

Due to the condition of the main, we have had to extend this project, investing in our network. While we understand there is disruption right now, this is one of the last sections of metallic pipe in this area, meaning it will be less disruptive in the future once replaced.

We are planning to have the project completed within the next four weeks.

Due to the location of the gas main in the road, it has been necessary to temporarily close Winter Road from just south of Oliver Road to the junction of Highland Road.

This closure will mean:

  • No through vehicle traffic past the closure in either direction in Winter Road.
  • Vehicle access to Winter Road north of the closure will be via a signed diversion route from the Devonshire Avenue end of the road.
  • Vehicle access to properties within the closure will be maintained – local arrangements will be in place and the team on site will keep residents informed.

We’ll soon be working to upgrade the gas network in the London Road area of Winchester. This work will ensure that local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.

Work will start on Monday, 20 October and be completed by 23 November. To do this safely, temporary traffic lights will be in place at the junctions of Worthy Road and School Lane, and London Road and Pudding Lane.

On 10 November, we will need to close School Lane at its junction with Worthy Road until February 2026. Access for residents and local businesses will be maintained.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience this work might cause, but it really is essential to keep the gas flowing safely.

If anyone has a question about our work, they can call our customer service team on 0800 912 1700
