Update - Monday 21 September
Following further investigations, we have identified a number of factors which mean it is not appropriate to continue with our planned gas mains replacement work on Fleming Way at this time.
Our teams have found discrepancies between existing network records and the infrastructure on site, and current gas demand means the section of main due for replacement cannot safely be disconnected as originally planned.
To avoid further disruption and ensure the work can be delivered safely and efficiently, we will shortly reinstate the highway and remove the current traffic management, allowing traffic flow to return to normal.
Before returning to carry out the replacement, we will undertake additional surveys and investigations and confirm the most appropriate construction approach. This will allow us to develop a more detailed programme and minimise future disruption.
We remain committed to completing this essential upgrade and will continue to work closely with West Sussex County Council and local stakeholders, providing further updates as plans are developed.
We're carrying out essential gas network upgrades in the Fleming Way area. This work will ensure a continued safe and reliable supply of gas is delivered to Crawley properties.

What we're doing
We'll be replacing our old metal pipes along Fleming Way. This is part of our 30-year programme of work to replace our old mains, reaching the end of their useful lives, with new, reliable plastic pipe.
When we're working
Our work will start on Monday 31 August and be carried out in phases to help minimise disruption. This project is expected to last approximately six weeks.
Where we'll be working
Our work along Fleming Way will be carried out in three phases - each lasting approximately two weeks:
- Between Premier Inn and Newton Road
- Between Newton Road and just short of the roundabout junction with Gatwick Road
- At the roundabout junction with Gatwick Road
To ensure everyone's safety while we upgrade our network, we need to install temporary traffic lights around our sites. Please allow additional times for your journeys while the lights are in operation.
We understand roadworks can be frustrating. However, this work is essential to ensuring nearby homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable supply of gas.
