Deal, A258 London Road

We're preparing to carry out essential gas network upgrades in the A258 London Road area of Deal.

This work will ensure properties across Deal continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come. It's part of a 30-year programme to replace our old metal mains, reaching the end of their useful lives, with new plastic pipe.

Our project follows close consultation with Kent County Council. It will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to road users, residents and businesses. The most disruptive part of our work has been scheduled for the school summer holidays when the roads are typically quieter.

Our phases of work

A258 London Road

  • Starting Monday 31 March
  • Lasting approximately 16 weeks

Our engineers will be upgrading our network along A258 London Road between Darracot Close and Sholden New Road.

To ensure everyone's safety and to manage traffic flow, temporary lights will be in operation around our site.

We will also need to close Manor Avenue when we reach its junction with A258 London Road.

Phase one closure

  • Starting Monday 5 May
  • Lasting approximately six weeks

Our engineers will be working along The Street and Sholden New Road from Monday 5 May.

We will start at The Street's junction with A258 London Road, progressing onto Sholden New Road and then working back towards the A258.

The roads will be closed to motorists around our site as we progress.

Phase two closure

  • Starting Wednesday 23 July
  • Lasting approximately six weeks

We will need to close a section of A258 London Road to safely complete this phase of work. Our engineers will be working between 300 London Road and the Darracot Close junction.

In addition, Manor Road will be shut between its junctions with A258 London Road and Rectory Road, while Rectory Road will also be closed at its junction with Manor Road.

Phase three closure

  • Starting Monday 1 September
  • Lasting approximately four weeks

Our final phase of closures will affect Vicarage Lane and Mongeham Road.

We'll be upgrading our old pipes the full length of Vicarage Lane and between number 30 Mongeham Road to its junction with A258 London Road.

These roads will be shut for safety around our work area.

What do the closures mean for me?

  • Vehicle access for residents within the closure points will change as works progress. Our engineers and local signage will keep road users and residents informed.
  • Bus routes will be impacted. We advise residents to contact their service provider for the latest updates on changes to services/routes, timetables and bus stop locations.
  • We’ll work with the local council to ensure refuse collections can continue to be made with as little disruption as possible.
  • Emergency services will be informed about the road closure and will have contingency plans in place while roads are closed.

A map outlining our work and closure areas, plus the diversion routes in place, can be found below.

We recognise roadworks can be frustrating, and we're sorry for any inconvenience this essential work may cause. However, the new plastic pipe has a lifespan of 80 years, which means when the work is complete, nearby residents and businesses will be able to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply long into the future.
