Our planned gas network upgrades

We're preparing to carry out essential gas network upgrades in East Dulwich to ensure nearby properties continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come. It's part of a 30-year programme to replace our old metal mains, reaching the end of their useful lives, with new plastic pipe.

Our project follows close consultation with the local authority and other key stakeholders. It will be carried out in two phases lasting approximately five weeks in total. The affected roads will be closed around our site for everyone's safety.

Chesterfield Grove

  • Work will start here on Monday 5 January. This phase will last approximately five weeks.
  • Our engineers will be working in Chesterfield Grove, between its junction with Melbourne Grove and Lordship Lane.
  • The road will be closed around our work area.

Playfield Crescent

  • We'll begin our network upgrades in Playfield Crescent on Monday 12 January. This phase of work will last approximately four weeks.
  • Our engineers will be replacing our old pipe the entire length of this road and the carriageway will be shut to motorists around our work area.

What do the closures mean for me?

  • Signed diversions will be in place for affected motorists.
  • Vehicle access for residents within the closure points will change as works progress. Our engineers and local signage will keep road users and residents informed.
  • All businesses will remain open around our closure areas. Access to these commercial properties will be maintained throughout.
  • Bus routes may be impacted. We advise residents to contact their service provider for the latest updates on changes to services/routes, timetables and bus stop locations.
  • We’ll work with the local council to ensure refuse collections can continue to be made with as little disruption as possible.
  • Emergency services will be informed about the road closure and will have contingency plans in place while roads are closed.

We recognise roadworks can be frustrating, and we're sorry for any inconvenience this essential work may cause. However, the new plastic pipe has a lifespan of 80 years, which means when the work is complete, local residents and businesses will be able to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply long into the future.
