Update - Friday 2 October

Work on phase one of our gas main replacement programme began as planned on Tuesday 22 September and is progressing well. 

So far, our engineers have installed around 130 metres of new plastic gas main and renewed several service pipes supplying nearby properties. Road reinstatement works will continue over the weekend. 

For safety reasons, two-way traffic lights remain in place. We appreciate this is a busy route and, to help minimise disruption, additional traffic management operatives are on site between 7am and 7pm, seven days a week, to monitor conditions and adjust traffic light timings where possible. 

We remain in close contact with key stakeholders and will continue to review traffic impacts throughout the project, adjusting wherever we can to keep disruption to a minimum while completing this essential work safely and efficiently.

We're carrying out essential gas network upgrades in the B2093 area of Hastings. This work will ensure a continued safe and reliable supply of gas is delivered to nearby homes and businesses.

What we're doing

We'll be replacing our old metal pipes - laid around a century ago - in the B2093 area. This is part of our 30-year programme of work to replace our old mains, reaching the end of their useful lives, with new, reliable plastic pipe.

When we're working

Our work will start on Tuesday 22 September and be carried out in six phases to help minimise disruption. This project is expected to finish in mid-August 2028.

Temporary traffic lights on the B2093

To ensure everyone's safety while this work is carried out, temporary traffic lights will be installed around our work area as we progress.

These lights will be manually operated to ensure traffic continues to flow on this sensitive route. However, we'd recommend motorists allow extra time for journeys while the lights are in operation.

  • Our engineers will be replacing 1500m and upgrading 30 services to adjoining properties

  • We'll be working between its junctions with Stonestile Lane and Elphinstone Road
  • Our engineers will be replacing 650m and upgrading seven services to adjoining properties
  • We're hopeful of finishing this phase by Mon 5 Apr 2027

  • We'll be working between its junctions with Elphinstone Road and Norcross Close
  • Our engineers will be replacing 700m and upgrading 11 services to adjoining properties

  • Our engineers will be replacing 425m and upgrading 38 services to adjoining properties

  • Our engineers will be replacing 450m of our old metal gas main

Small businesses affected by planned streetworks

For business customers only, compensation can be claimed for loss of gross profit and not loss of takings, subject to your claim meeting the criteria in The Gas (Street Works) (Compensation of Small Business) Regulations 1996. Before you apply for business compensation, to save you time and ensure you are eligible to apply, please ensure the following:

  • SGN engineering work must have lasted continuously for at least 28 days.
  • Annual turnover in aggregate must be less than £1 million at 1996 prices (£1.918 million for 2020/21). The annual turnover figure includes not only the business affected by our work but also the turnover of any associated businesses of the same type, operating from different premises.
  • The claimed loss of gross profit must be at least 2.5% of annual turnover (the minimum claim is £500).
  • The initial written indication of your intention to claim must be submitted within three months of the completion of SGN engineering works.
  • Supporting evidence including financial statements and documentation must be submitted within six months of completion of engineering works.
  • A statement of the calculated loss of profit that you wish to claim.

We recognise roadworks can be frustrating. However, the new plastic pipe has a lifespan of 80 years. This means that once our essential upgrade project is complete, Hastings residents and businesses will be able to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.
