From Monday 20 January 2025, we will be replacing our gas mains in and around The Broadway in Haywards Heath. These works have been planned with urgency to provide a permanent solution to the ongoing gas escapes in the area. This work will ensure we can continue to provide residents and businesses with a safe and efficient gas supply.
By replacing these old metal gas pipes with new plastic pipes, we can avoid future leaks on this section of old gas main.
Due to the challenging location of the gas pipes in the road, we will be carrying out these works under traffic management. We’ve planned these works in phases to minimise disruption and ensure we maintain traffic flow around the one-way road network.
The following timelines are for guidance - timelines are approximate and may change as we progress.
Phase one – Monday 20 January for eight weeks
At the junction/slip road outside the Star Hotel from The Broadway onto South Road
Lane restrictions of the Broadway junction slip road eastbound with South Road
- We’ll be working on the one-way filter lane heading eastbound onto South Road. We will need to have a temporary lane/junction closure in place at this junction. This will mean no right turn onto South Road from The Broadway.
Junction closure (westbound) of Church Road onto The Broadway
- Due to the location of connection work on The Broadway, we will need to temporarily close the westbound junction of Church Road onto The Broadway.
- This lane closure will mean vehicles can turn into Church Lane but not out of Church Lane onto The Broadway. We will do our best to remove this junction closure as soon as we can.
Bus stop suspensions on The Broadway
- We advise bus passengers to contact their service provider for the latest updates to bus stop locations, timetables, and routes.
Layby parking suspended outside shops
- We will need to temporarily close the parking bays outside the shops on the opposite side of the road. This area will be used to store large pipes needed to complete the replacement work.
Phase two – Monday 17 March for four weeks
Muster Green Lane
- We'll continue working along Muster Green Road between the junction of Paddockhall Road and Dolphin Road.
- We'll need to temporarily close an eastbound lane. A signed diversion route will be in place.
- Bus routes impacted – we advise passengers to contact their service provider for the latest updates/changes to service.
Phase three – Monday 14 April for four weeks
- South Road – we'll be working along South Road for approximately 250m from outside Zizzi’s to outside Fludes Carpet Shop.
- There will be no traffic management required.
- Parking bay suspensions will be required as we progress.
Phase four – Monday 12 May for 3 weeks, on The Broadway
The Broadway – southbound lane restrictions from Pizza Express to the junction of South Road
- This will mean no southbound travel between these junctions. A signed diversion will be in place via B2028 Sydney Road and the B2112 Oathall Road/Hazelgrove Road onto Muster Green North.
- Bus routes impacted – we advise passengers to contact their service provider for the latest updates/changes to services.
To help minimise disruption and the duration of the work involved, we’ve carried out trial hole investigations in advance. Knowing what is under the ground and the potential challenges ahead of starting the work has significantly reduced the amount of time to complete these works.
