From Monday 7 October for approximately 12 weeks, we will be working to replace the gas main along Hove Street. Our engineers will be replacing the gas main between the junctions of Church Road and Kingsway.
These essential works involve replacing old metal gas pipe with a new plastic pipe to ensure we can continue to provide residents and the wider community with a safe and efficient gas supply. The work is needed because of recent gas escapes in the area.
Due to the location of the gas main in the road and for everyone’s safety, we will need to temporarily close the road in phases. To help maintain access for residents and minimise impact on the local community, we’ll be closing the road in the following phases.
Phase one
We’ll be working on the Princes Avenue junction of Hove Street, where we will have a northbound lane closure in place. Through vehicle access along Hove Street will be for southbound road users only, with no vehicle access for northbound vehicles.
Phase two
We’ll then close Hove Street from Princes Avenue to the A259 Kingsway. There will be no through vehicle access onto the A259 Kingsway. Access to Hove Street will be via Church Street.
Phase three
Hove Street will be closed between the junctions of Princes Avenue and Vallance Road – there will be no through access along Hove Street past Princes Avenue, with access to Vallance Road from the A259 Kingsway.
Phase four
We’ll be closing Hove Street between Church Road and Vallance Road, with no through access along Hove Street. Access to Vallance Road will be from the A259 Kingsway.
Access for deliveries and residents will be maintained during all phases, with access arrangements needing to change depending on the phase and our location in the road.
We are unable to provide durations or dates for each phase. Progress will depend on access to properties to complete service connections. Connections are challenging in multi-occupancy buildings.
Property access arrangements
Once the gas main has been installed, each property on Hove Street with a gas supply will need to have their service connected to it. Access to meters and properties will be required to carry out important safety checks. Our site team will liaise with properties to make local access arrangements - we ask for the support of residents in providing access availability.
Vehicle access to properties within the closure will be maintained. Access arrangements will change as the works progress. The team on site will be able to assist with any questions and signage will keep road users informed.
Bus routes on Hove Street will be affected – we advise passengers to contact their service provider for the latest information on changes to bus stop locations and timetables as a result of this road closure.
Bin collection days will remain unchanged unless you are advised otherwise by your service provider.
We appreciate road closures are disruptive and we’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
