Temporary road closures and traffic lights in Mayfield Road, Portsmouth for gas main replacement
From Thursday 23 July, our contractor FPF Utilities Limited will be carrying out work to replace the gas main along Mayfield Road in Portsmouth. These works are mandatory HSE-driven gas main replacement work, essential to ensure we can continue to maintain a safe and efficient gas supply and avoid gas leaks in the future.
Due to the location of gas pipes in the road, for everyone’s safety, we will need to have temporary road closures and traffic lights in operation. To help minimise disruption near schools, we have planned this work to include the school summer holidays.
Work will begin on Thursday 23 July are expected to be finished in November 2026, lasting approximately 16 weeks.

Temporary road closures will mean:
- No through vehicle access past the closure in either direction – a signed diversion route will be in place
- Vehicle access to properties located within the closure will be maintained – our site team will keep residents informed about access arrangements
- Pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained
- Bin collection days will remain unchanged unless you hear otherwise from your provider
- Bus routes may be impacted – passengers are advised to contact their service provider for the latest updates/changes to service
Service connections
Properties with gas supplies on the roads affected will need to be connected to the new gas main once installed. Our engineers will need access to properties to complete safety checks and transfer the service. They will also need to interrupt your gas supply for a few hours to complete this.
Properties affected will receive further communications about these works. No gas supplies will be interrupted without advance notification.
We appreciate this road closure may be disruptive for residents. The pipes are in a really challenging location due to the road space available and we assure you our engineers will be working as quickly and as safely as possible to complete these works.
We are sorry for any inconvenience our work may cause and thank you for your patience and understanding.
