Salisbury, A36 Wilton Road

Update: Friday 05 December

The final phase of our project to upgrade the gas network in Salisbury is due to begin. The work in Wilton Road will ensure local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.

Works will start on Monday 5 January and last for approximately 20 weeks, completing in May.

To do this safely, we’ll carry this work out in two phases, where traffic management will be needed.

Phase one: Monday 5 January – End of May, 2026

Westbound lane of Wilton Road from the junction of Gorringe Road to Windsor Street.

  • Temporary traffic lights will be in operation around our work area as we progress along Wilton Road.

This will mean:

  • Bus stop suspensions will be in operation within our work areas
  • Temporary traffic lights will be manned between peak hours
  • Traffic delays are possible; we’d advise road users to plan ahead
Phase two: Monday 13 April – Sunday 10 May 2026

Wilton Road from the junction of Windsor Street to St Paul’s Roundabout.

  • There will be a one-way westbound directional road closure in place.

This will mean:

  • No through vehicle access past the closure heading westbound from St Paul’s roundabout towards Wilton Road
  • A diversion route will be in place for westbound vehicle traffic
  • Eastbound traffic will remain unaffected
  • Pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained
  • Bus routes will be affected heading westbound on Wilton Road – we’d advise passengers to contact their service provider for the latest information
  • Resident/business access to properties located within the closure will be maintained

We appreciate that work in this area is sensitive and roadworks can be frustrating; we recognise this and are doing everything we can to get this essential work done as quickly and as safely as possible.

We’d like to thank everyone affected for your patience, understanding and support as we work to improve the energy infrastructure in Salisbury. We will keep people updated on our progress here.

Original post

From Monday 23 September to Friday 25 October, our contractors FPF Utilities Limited will replace the gas main on the A36 Wilton Road, Salisbury.

These essential works are required to address previous leaks on the gas main and will involve replacing old metal low pressure gas pipes with new plastic gas mains.

Due to the location of the gas pipe in the road, for everyone’s safety and to avoid road closures, we need to install temporary traffic lights around our work area.

We have planned our work in two phases:

Phase one - from Monday 23 September to Friday 25 October

We'll be working along the A36 Wilton Road between its junctions with The Kingsway and North Street. We’ll also be working on a short section of The Kingsway.

For everyone's safety, we'll be using temporary multiway traffic lights which will be manually controlled from 7am to 7pm every day.

Phase two - from Monday 11 November to Thursday 21 November

We’ll return to complete the final section of replacement work on the Wilton roundabout.

For everyone's safety, we'll be using temporary multiway traffic lights which will be manually controlled from 7am to 7pm every day.

Important information

  • Access to side roads and properties will be maintained.
  • Bus routes may be affected – please check with your service provider for the latest updates on changes to bus timetables and routes.

We're sorry for any inconvenience these works may cause. We understand how disruptive work on the A36 is for road users and the local community - replacing the gas main is the only permanent solution to addressing the ongoing leaks and disruptive emergency repairs.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
