Upgrading our network in Sevenoaks
Updated - 5pm, Tuesday 6 October
We're continuing to make good progress with our essential gas network upgrades in the Amherst Hill and Worships Hill area.
Following the challenges encountered earlier in the works, additional resources have been deployed to site to help accelerate our programme. The team has now successfully completed the outstanding gas service connections, which represents an important step forward.
Traffic management changes
The traffic lights will be repositioned approximately 100m further up from the Worships Hill junction, towards Miller & Carter, before Wednesday morning's rush hour. This change will help improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in the area.
We'll continue to have marshals stationed in the area to monitor and manage traffic flow, particularly at the lower end of Worships Hill, to keep vehicles moving as effectively as possible.
Montreal Road
Our engineers are carrying out a further insertion of the new gas main. Subject to the outcome of this work, the traffic lights will move towards Montreal Road later this week.
Here we will make another excavation and carry out a longer insertion of the new main up the hill. The project team is hopeful there will be fewer existing services here, enabling the works to progress more quickly. However, further investigations and camera surveys will be carried out before this section is completed, meaning the programme remains dependent on what is found underground.
Continuing to minimise disruption
We've been working extended hours and over the weekend, plus deploying additional resources, to help speed up this project.
We recognise the continued impact these essential works are having on residents, businesses and road users around Amherst Hill and Worships Hill. We will provide a further update once the team has completed the next stage of the main insertion and we have greater certainty around the timing for moving the traffic lights towards Montreal Road.
Why this project matters
Strengthening critical infrastructure
These upgrades will improve safety and reliability for the community
Avoids short-notice disruption
Not investing in upgrades here risks unplanned gas outages, emergency repairs and greater long-term disruption
Delivering energy sustainably
Renewing our pipes will help cut methane emissions and support the transition to renewable gases such as biomethane
