Whyteleafe, Godstone Road

Update - Friday 28 August

During our work on Godstone Road, we discovered a high-voltage electrical cable near the gas main. As a result, we needed to revise our original engineering plans to ensure our network upgrades could be carried out safely.

We previously communicated that this change would mean our work would be extended by three weeks. However, following consultation with stakeholders regarding the potential disruption an extension would cause, particularly with the reopening of schools in September, we have reviewed our programme of works and identified opportunities to accelerate progress. We'll be working extended hours and have revised our schedule.

The road closure on Whyteleafe Hill, and the traffic management located at the roundabout, will be removed by Thursday 3 September, ahead of the new school term.

The project's second phase will then start. This will involve temporary two-way traffic signals on Godstone Road and a closure of Station Road. We expect these arrangements will have a significantly lower impact on school-related traffic and the wider community.

We'd like to thank the community for the continued patience and understanding shown while our essential works take place.

Our essential network upgrades in Whyteleafe

We're working to upgrade the gas network in the Godstone Road area of Whyteleafe.

This work will ensure a continued safe and reliable supply of gas is delivered to nearby homes and businesses and is part of our 30-year programme of work to replace our old mains, reaching the end of their useful lives, with new, reliable plastic pipe.

The project began on Monday 20 July and is expected to last until December. Details of the roads affected by this work can be found below.

Where we're working

Godstone Road

  • Started Monday 20 July
  • Lasting until December
  • We'll be working between Salmons Lane and Whyteleafe Roundabout
  • For everyone's safety, temporary traffic lights are in operation
  • The bus stop on Godstone Road is also suspended - please check with your service provider for updates to routes and timetables

Station Road

  • Started Monday 20 July
  • This work will last for approximately six weeks
  • Station Road will be closed at its junction with Godstone Road
  • A signed diversion will be in place for affected motorists, with access maintained for residents and businesses

Edgeware Close

  • Starting Monday 31 August
  • This work is expected to last approximately nine weeks
  • We'll be working near its junction with Hillside Road
  • Most of our excavations will be carried out in the footpath, but we may need to implement give and take traffic management if we need to work closer or on the carriageway

Salmons Lane

  • Starting Monday 2 November
  • This work will last approximately six weeks
  • Our engineers will be working at its junction with Godstone Road
  • For safety, this junction will be closed during this phase of work

We recommend allowing additional time for your journeys while the closures are in place. Please also be reminded to follow the diversion routes and avoid using smaller roads which should be considered as access only.

We recognise roadworks can be frustrating, and we're sorry for any inconvenience this essential work may cause. However, the new plastic pipe has a lifespan of 80 years, which means when the work is complete, nearby residents and businesses will be able to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply long into the future.
