Yapton, Bilsham Road

Project updates

Bittern Avenue

On Friday 13 March, our replacement work and temporary road closure moved down to Bittern Avenue.

This means:

  • Loveys Road fully reopened on Friday 13 March – no access to the A259 from Bilsham Road
  • No vehicle access past Bittern Avenue to the A259 or from the A259 to Yapton – all through traffic will need to use the diversion route
  • No vehicle access past Taylors Close to the A259 or from the A259 to Yapton – all through traffic will need to use the diversion route
  • Taylors Close and houses south of Bittern Avenue will access via A259
  • Bus routes will remain on diversion as they have throughout this project
  • All residents from north of Taylors Close will access via Burndell Road

Developers' road resurfacing at the entrance to Bittern Avenue were carried out on Friday 13 March. Bittern Road will have a temporary road closure in place on its junction with Bilsham Road. Traffic marshalls will manage vehicles in and out of site maintained by the resurfacing contractor for residents of Bittern Avenue. For more details about these works please contact Dan Stovell, Compliance Manager for Joyce Groundwork, 07894049235.

Taylors Close

On Friday 13 March, our replacement work and road closure moved to the junction of Taylors Close.

From Monday 16 March for approximately three weeks, we will need to temporarily close Yapton Road from Rybank Ryfe to the caravan site for a major connection across the road.

This means:

  • No through vehicle access past the closure in either direction (from Bilsham Road or the A259) – a signed diversion route will be in place
  • The caravan site will have access via the A259
  • Vehicle access to the farm will be via Burndell Road side of the closure

Yapton Road – Middleton by Sea

From Wednesday 11 March for approximately five weeks

We've started work on Yapton Road, Middleton by Sea, from the Silver Birch Drive Roundabout under temporary two-way traffic lights. We are hoping to complete these works under temporary traffic lights rather than closing the road as originally planned. We may need to install a road closure when we reach the junction of Worms Lane and will provide an update as works progress.

We appreciate how disruptive our work may be for the community and we assure you our engineers are doing everything they can to complete these works as quickly and as safely as possible.

Power On works continue along Bilsham Road and the wider area under temporary traffic lights – if you need to speak to Power On about their works, please contact 03453 223322 or email enquiries@poweron-uk.co.uk

Thank you for your continued support.

In addition to the closure currently in place on Bilsham Road, from 1pm on Thursday 15 January, Loveys Road will be closed at its junction with Bilsham Road. This is following safety concerns where vehicles are ignoring all signage and using this as an alternative route. This leaves us with no other safe option than to close the road.

As the closure on Bilsham Road moves along the road past Loveys Road, the junction of Loveys Road will be re-opened.   We will keep you updated as we progress.

The closure will mean

  • No vehicle access in or out of Loveys Lane from either direction
  • Vehicle access in and out of Loveys Road and surrounding roads will be via Canal Road
  • Vehicle access in and out of Bilsham Road will be via the A259
  • Concrete blocks will be in place on the junction of the A259 and Bilsham Road
  • CCTV cameras will be in operation and any traffic/violations will be recorded and reported to the police

We will have traffic spotters in place during peak times, to support with managing traffic flow on the first two days of the closure. We will also have a spotter van with flashing lights on the junction of A259 on Thursday from 1pm to 6.30.

We understand how frustrating this closure will be for the residents of Loveys Road, surrounding roads and those living on Bilsham Road; unfortunately, the driving behaviour of cars using these roads as a rat run has left us no alternative options.  The safety of residents, the community and our engineers is our priority.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience this will cause and thank you for your continued patience and understanding.

Project overview

We're returning to complete essential gas main replacement work on Bilsham Road, Yapton Road and Burndell Road in Yapton.

From Monday 3 November until June 2026, we'll be replacing the low-pressure gas mains on Yapton Road, Burndell Road, Bilsham Road, Graham Road, Bilsham Lane and adjoining side road connections. The gas pipes being replaced are the pipes that feed gas supplies directly to local properties.

These essential Health and Safety (HSE) mandated works involve the replacement of old metal gas pipes with new plastic pipes to ensure we can continue to provide residents with a safe and efficient gas supply and avoid gas leaks in the future.

Due to the location of the pipe in the road and for everyone’s safety, we’ll need to have a temporary road closure in place.

Phase one

From Monday 3 November for approximately 11 weeks: temporary multi-way traffic lights on Yapton Road and Burndell Road

We’ll be carrying out connection works that will require us to have multi-way lights on Yapton Road and Burndell Road,
between the junction of Rollaston Park and Bilsham Road.

Due to the location of the work, we’ll need to have temporary bus stop suspensions, alternative stops will be provided. Buses will continue to operate.

Phase two

From Monday 5 January for approximately 19 weeks: full temporary road closure on B2132 Bilsham Road

The road closure will mean:

  • No through vehicle access along Bilsham Road between the junctions
  • Resident access to properties within the closure will be maintained; local access arrangements will change as we progress, those affected will be kept informed of arrangements.
  • Pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained past the closure throughout the work programme
  • Bus routes will be affected – we advise passengers to contact their service provider Stagecoach for the latest updates/changes to service
  • Bin collection days will remain unchanged unless you are advised otherwise by your service provider

Phase three

From Monday 20 April to Friday 5 June 2026: temporary road closure on B2132 Yapton Road

We’ll be completing the final section of mains on Yapton Road from the junction of A259 to Silver Birch Roundabout. Due to the width and location of the pipes in the road, we’ll need to have a temporary road closure in place between these junctions.
