H100 NIA: Colourant in Natural Gas and Hydrogen Fires

Project name: Colorant in Natural Gas and Hydrogen Fires
Project lead: SGN
Partners: DNV GL

This report reviews the relative risks of natural gas and hydrogen regarding the visibility. The study includes fires that could occur on the H100 Fife network, from production, storage and/or distribution.

The work included a workshop to review the hazards and risks associated with the flame visibility of hydrogen releases, a review of literature and small-scale tests.

The study identified where hydrogen fires could occur on the H100 Fife network covering hydrogen production, storage and distribution.  It considered the risk to the public and workers on the network from identified loss of containment events.  A literature review and small-scale tests supplement the discussion of the relative risk of natural gas and hydrogen regarding flame visibility.
