The Intelligent Gas Grid project

Our challenge

The UK gas grid is very complex. It has thousands of kilometres of pipes that need maintenance, control, and sometimes repair. This work is usually done manually by our engineers which takes time and resources.

Our project

The Intelligent Gas Grid project uses new technology to monitor and control gas networks. Sensors help make real-time decisions to lower network pressure, reduce methane leaks, and increase the use of low-carbon gases like hydrogen and biomethane. AI and machine learning are also used to improve demand forecasting and plan maintenance.

Key benefits

Sensors give a better view of the network’s condition, allowing for timely maintenance and quick problem detection. AI and machine learning improve forecasting, leading to better planning and more efficient network management.
